A total of 68.5% of infants a week old or younger were categorized as victims of neglect, such as deprivation of necessities or medical neglect, and 13.2% were victims of physical abuse. Among all children under age 1 in the study, 38.8% were younger than one month.
The investigators used data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System for the October 2005 through September 2006 period, and published their findings in the April 4 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. It is the first national study examining nonfatal infant maltreatment, they stated.
