Contemporary Pediatrics:

Can you comment on how important the NAPNAP conference is and the benefits it offers to both providers and patients?

Maureen Madden, DNP, CPNP-AC, CCRN, FCCM, FAAN:

I think it’s incredibly important because it is the home for pediatric nurse practitioners in both primary care and acute care. It spans the entire spectrum, providing an environment where individuals can network, gain education to improve patient care and outcomes, and be part of a unified voice advocating for pediatric patients.

Contemporary Pediatrics:

Are meetings like this even more important given the current health care climate?

Madden:

Absolutely, this is not intended to be a controversial interview, but both the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and pediatric nurse practitioners who care for children are deeply concerned about some of the governmental decision-making taking place.

Vaccines are a clear example, with mixed messages about the necessity of vaccinating children. Now, with the measles outbreak, both a child and an adult have died from measles in the past 2 weeks. That is just one aspect of concern.

There are also significant worries about funding for vulnerable populations—children who rely on federal support for essential services. This includes Medicaid and Medicare, particularly for those with conditions like renal disease, as well as programs like SNAP and other food support, in a time when there's a lot of insecurity for both health care and food, it's very troublesome.
